The Dakar Tour started a few days ago in Lima, where the first stages of the Dakar 2013 were unveiled. The sand dunes that will loom into the competitors’ sights right from the beginning of the race are whetting the appetite of the Peruvian riders and drivers. “We set the bar very high last January. The 35th edition of the Dakar will also be the 5th to take place on the South American continent, which has hosted the event since 2009. From 5th to 20th January 2013, the competitors will follow the route between Lima in Peru and Santiago in Chile, with a rest day planned at San Miguel de Tucuman in Argentina. The desert will be on the programe from the first days of the rally, for the first time in its history. In the car category, everyone expected it to be a Mini affair, since the X-Raid team seemed to have the best hardware and the best drivers… and this was the case! In the end, the Frankfurt-based team won eight stages out of thirteen with four different pilots (with Stéphane Peterhansel taking three). Most importantly, the team was always in command of the overall classification. The Qatari quit the Dakar Rally across South America after his temperamental Hummer broke down in the ninth stage between Antofagasta and Iquique in Chile. He lost more precious time when he was forced to make three unscheduled stops on the 556km stage. The multitalented Qatari ace only decided to quit and head for Doha to take part in the last qualification event for the Olympics once it was clear that he won’t be able to make the lost time.
